Surgeon Fiesta 24/11/08 with photos!

Ok guys i think we finally did what no people did. We caught a whole bunch of big surgeons today! w0o0o0o0o0o

Got there at 10 and within half and hour we were on. There was so many decent ones today managed to pull a 30cm, 44cm, 45cm, and a WHOPPING 52cm surgeon! There was a 45cm blackie which was thrown back along with the 30cm surgeon.

These fish had no chance against us this time as we just pull them out of the tight space between pylons. mwahahhaha

They were pulled up with bleeding heads and body.

The 52cm one was sooo fat, it was as fat as that 55cm kingie dazzassj6 caught! The hook used for this 52cm was a small live bait hook! and i cant believe this one manage to actually bend it a bit!

Here are some photos for you lot to enjoy as you wont be seeing this many surgeons in one session lol

first landbased king landed, but undersized =( 15/11/08

landed my first king in the arvo today however it was undersized while going for surgeons

landed it in 10 seconds using good prawns, first fish on the new hayabusa live bait hook.

54cm =(

and it also had these weird marks on its tail. Maybe a dolphin had a go at it?

When i released it, it could barely move, but it managed to swim away.

caught it in the harbour.

Losing Hoodlum Surgeons, bent hook, popped braid & pyloned!

Began the day with a 20Litre of soaked bread as our burley bomb at the new found place.

Drkcld has his first run from decent surgeon which this time, ran out! out towards the channel. I thought he was going to land it this time but then it ran back in, and towards the wharf and busted him off! >_<>_<~!

Next up my rod goes off again, this time i managed to pump it like 3 times, it was REALLY heavy on my 24kg rod. I was using 60lb trace now. I thought nothing was going to bite this, until it this one took it. However as i was reeling it up, my 50lb braid popped!!!! i cant believe it popped. It might have been it the previous abrased bit of line which popped it. Or maybe it was the double uni knot which popped.

After that Drkcld has his next go, as he gets his next hook up, he pulls it but the hook was thrown, and snagged on somebody elses line.

Then my last and final fight of the day! This is the best fight i ever had with a surgeon. It started off with me walking away somewhere far from my rod, then my reel goes off, drkcld quickly locks the drag for me and fights it, as i ran over, he gave me then rod. I then felt it was running out, and this one is huge, 60cm to 65cm approx. Drkcld goes grabs the net ready, and this time i actually pumped the fish properly as i was using 60lb trace so was pretty confident. This time i managed like 8 HEAVY pump and wind action. I didnt want to take my time, its just i had to pump with two hands instead of one, then i can reel! So yeh when i thought i was going to land this big surgeon to the surface hahaha, it started pulling line again while it was on FULL DRAG! So i upped the drag pressure all out to "SUNSET" it couldnt take line anymore and i gave it a few more pumps until it bent the hook and made its escape!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! AHHHHHHHh Just a metre or two from the surface!!!

AFter that it was all quiet ended the day with nothing but crappy throw back fish.

Spring action in the Harbour Trevs and Surgeons 20-10-2008

Finally got back to fishing today in the harbour and boy was it good!

Me and drkcld were going for surgeons today, you know the kingfish sized surgeons. I came prepared with a 15-24kg rod, penn overhead GLS 25 reel, 50lb braid with 20lb fluoro trace and some heavy duty strong hooks i found, not the best but still strong.

Drkcld's rod went off first, he was using 30lb braid on a 6000 reel and couldnt stop this train like surgeon! i think he hooked up a really big one, i yelled "lock the drag!" he replies "i did!" haha yeh couldnt stop it and cut him off.

Then it was my turn, i hooked up a decent on estimating in its 45 to 50cm, i hooked it on my strong rod and i thought i almost had it cause the fight lasted much longer than the other ones we usually get, it swam out then back in, the worst thing that happened to me was it pulled the overhead reel off my reel seat on my rod!!!!!!! tension was lost, but it was still there, then it threw the hook. Reeled it back in to see my hook got pulled also. I was that close to getting it in! nearly on the surface too!

Anyways they were still there the rest of the day, had a few more hook ups but the hook kept coming off, maybe its because i kept lock dragging it and it doesn't set probably. We then started getting big trevallies in the process of catching surgeons.

Bagged 7 decent trevallies today, one that beat my pb going at 44cm! so fat!
Like Timpon i landed these in 2 seconds lol and lost many more trevs probably hooked up 20 trevs today.

Groper(pic) & Mother Surgeon

Starting fishing this morning other from the usual place. Turned up with nothing. Until sunrise, the fight started to come. My rod goes off first and the 24kg rod was bent to the max, it was the strongest fight i had with one of these, then got busted off on de pylon. Drkcld's trace pops for the next fish. Later on a school was under us. Then Drkcld goes to me "sh*t! the mother sawtail just swam out around your bait!"

It was a 70cm+ white sawtail that came out and as soon as drkcld said that, my rod goes off, and it pulled line out sooo fast. The fastest i ever seen. It took like 0.5 sec to snag me on the pylon. Completely dusted! I am so sure this is stronger than a 1 metre kingie.

Next Drkcld hooks this mother again and as soon as he applies pressure on the fish, the hook comes out. It turns out that it either BIT through the hook with its super sharp strong teeth OR it broke the hi-carbon hook underpressure, however it was just a 1 second tug.

I dont think anything gear can land this sort of fish. Its has all the anti fishermen properties. A specie that has evolved to survive through the toughest battles with anglers.

Oh and heres a nice groper drkcld caught as a by catch along with many other by catches. 38cm Brown groper.

All fish were released.
